The second largest island of Thailand, Ko Samui is known internationally for Ang Thong National Marine Park, famed for its water activities such as kayaking and snorkelling. Its two most famous beaches, Chaweng and Lamai, are popular among visitors but you are still able to find your personal quiet spot to chill and unwind. If you are looking for some amusement, check out the Grandma and Grandpa rocks close to Lamai beach; they are shaped like human genitalia, and photos of them will spark animated conversations. Flight time: 1 hour 40 minutes

What can be found in Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city of Vietnam? Markets! Not wet markets, but markets that spill over with Vietnamese arts and craft, fashion accessories, clothes, tourist souvenirs, and more. The usual spots to visit are Saigon Square during the day, and to Chợ Bến Thành or Ben Thanh Market in the night. For better prices, skip Ben Thanh Market and head to Chợ Bình Tây in Chinatown. You will also be able to find more traditional, locally made Vietnamese items here. Flight time: 1 hour 55 minutes

Siem Reap is the home of majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat, as well as many other beautiful temples. It does not immediately come to mind, but Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei has many architectural sights worth checking out, most notably the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Old Customs House. There are also a couple of museums that will satisfy art and history buffs curious to gain a deeper insight into Brunei’s culture. Before you leave, do visit the largest stilt settlement in the world at Kampong Ayer and discover how this village continues to function well despite the modernization that is slowly taking over the capital. Flight time: 2 hours 20 minutes

The entire country of Myanmar retains many elements from its time as a British colony from 1824 to 1948. Walk down the streets of its capital Yangon, and you can see the colonial architecture in its buildings such as the High Court Building built in 1914 in Queen Anne style, the Myanmar Railway Headquarters, the Immigration Building, and Bogyoke Aung San Market that was constructed in 1926. Within the latter, you can find local Burmese dresses and fabrics. For a quick way to observe the life in and around the city, hop on a railroad ride on tracks that were built in 1954. Take the circular road that loops back into Yangon in under three hours. For something closer to nature, the tranquil surroundings of Kandawgyi Park will make you forget that you are actually in a city. Flight time: 2 hours 35 minutes.

The laid-back vibe of Vientiane in Laos is slowly being chipped away by a growing tourism industry. Nevertheless, it still retains much of its relaxing atmosphere. Some attractions to fill your weekend here include green adventure tours, getting a Lao massage, local cooking classes, and shopping for local handicrafts at places like Mixay Boutic, as well as honey, shampoo and soap made from Les Artisans Lao, which is a social enterprise that provides apprenticeship to people who are disadvantaged. Flight time: 2 hours 40 minutes.

With more places to visit, your weekends just became more interesting. Just remember that you should check in at least two hours before your flight, so look for flights that leave Friday night or Saturday morning. Now all you have to do is pack an overnight bag and bring it to work on Friday, or wake up bright and early on Saturday.
