Tigernuts and Chufa What’s The Difference ?

Tigernuts and Chufas are the same, the former in English and the latter in Spanish. It is the key ingredient in Horchata (The Drink made with the nuts)  and interestingly it was one of the earliest foods that were cultivated in civilisation. Oh and it’s not actually a nut but a vegetable. A high fibre tuber to be more specific.

Considered an ancient food, studies show its presence in food consumption with Egyptians in 4000BC and noted even now as a key source for development of mans body and brains up to a million years ago.

Chufala, Singapore’s First Freshly Made Horchata FnB brand

Chufala  (It’s a word play on Chufa + Lah) was started in September 2016 by three friends who have come together to spread the goodness of Horchata de Chufa. They concocted the idea of bringing the product to Singapore when they met in Spain while they were finishing up University in Europe and discovering the tasty thirst quencher.

We tried Chufala’s Horchata and it was smooth and tasty. Good for our warm tropical weather, its cooling, refreshing and keeps you feeling full.

Be prepped to have a bottle opener on standby.

For a little taste experiment we mixed Chufala’s Horchata with our local kopi and also an Americano for comparison . The results were quite pleasing. Needs a bit of tweaking because our agar-ation got us only that far. It was better with the roasted Americano. A good alternative especially if you don’t drink milk or are looking for something to add flavour into your regular coffee without the refined sugars.

Chufala In a Smoothie

Chufala Launches Health Drink Horchata In SingaporeChufala also has the Chufas/Tigernuts in powdered form and you can get raw chufa and peeled Chufas in convenient easy to go packets. I unloaded it into a smoothie made with 1 banana and 4 Tablespoons of rolled oats.  The chufa is high in dietary fibre which kept me feeling full for half a day. Adding chufa powder into the mix gave it a nice full bodied nutty taste and acted as a natural sweetener. Cut down the banana or add more water to control sweetness.
