Need a refreshing salad that fills your stomach and matches your healthy lifestyle in Jakarta. Here are 10 spots to load up on salads that will satisfy vegetarians, pescatarians, and omnivores.
Crunchy romaine lettuce mixed with tangy vinegar, topped with mushrooms or tuna… yum! I enjoy all kinds of salad, and often hunt down new salad places in Jakarta just to enjoy a colourful and nutritious meal on my plate. For salad lovers who cannot get enough of this refreshing plate of scrumptiousness, here are what I think are the 10 best places in Jakarta to get a healthy salad.
Located in Plaza Senayan, which can be considered one of the most popular malls in Jakarta, Monolog opens from breakfast to dinner. Their salads always keep me coming back. There are six to choose from, and my favourite is the Quinoa and sweet potato salad. Their menu also includes other healthy food such as Fresh fruit bowl with chia pudding and Bircher muesli.
Ranch Market at Grand Indonesia is a supermarket known for its good quality products that include an organic selection, and for using ‘Healthy Food, Healthy Lifestyle’ as its tagline. Their salad bar allows you to create your own custom salad for only IDR50.000,00. Choose from a variety of salad greens, and add in your choice of other ingredients such as beetroot, cheese, grilled chicken, and more. The salad dressings available include Indonesian’s favourite Thousand Island, as well as Italian, Thai, and blue cheese.
Japanese salad has always been my personal favourite because of the tasty soy and wafu dressing used. Although Poke Sushi at Ruko Dharmawangsa Square is known for its all-you-can-eat sushi and sashimi, I come here for their salad. They have a lovely crab salad, but my favourite is the Chef’s Special Salmon Salad. It is simply slices of fresh salmon, intricately arranged atop some slices of cucumber. Do come with an empty stomach because you will end up eating two plates of it, as I always do.
A small restaurant located at Hero Kemang Villa Complex, Antipodean is one of the best breakfast places in town and also has a comprehensive lunch menu. There are healthier selections available, including a selection of salads such as Chickpea feta coriander salad, Sweet paprika chicken salad, and Burmese shredded chicken salad. For me, the mouth watering Roasted vegetable is the winner.
Looking like a typical American diner, Goods Diner at Fairgrounds Jakarta offers a relaxed dining atmosphere, accompanied by music from some of the best DJs in town. Although burgers and milkshakes are expected here, the menu also consists of other healthy bites, fresh juices, and smoothies. The Caesar salad is a customer favourite, but my personal choice is the Roast pumpkin salad. Other healthy and vegetarian options are a Spinach salad, and a Tomato salad.
As one of the best supermarkets in Jakarta, Kem Chicks at Pacific Place also has plenty of ready-to-eat food that tastes great. When stocking up on steaks, pastas, and sushi, remember to add salad among your checkout items. Choose from Coleslaw, Beetroot salad, Tuna salad, Mixed green salad, Caesar salad, and more. Salads can also be combined on one big plate. I recommend the Mixed green salad topped with the Mushroom salad for different textures.
Marche, or ‘market’ in French, is exactly as its name suggests—diners can choose their choice of food from among an array of food stations, similar to those found in fresh food markets in Europe. Jakartans are crazy over the Caesar salad at this eatery located in Grand Indonesia Shopping Town. You can also choose to add smoked salmon or grilled chicken to your Caesar salad.
One of the oldest Italian restaurants in Kemang, Toscana continues to draw in the crowds. They serve good Italian fare, including the Caprese di mozzarella fresca. This is a plate of fresh Italian mozzarella cheese accompanied with freshly sliced tomatoes and drizzled with pesto sauce. A truly refreshing salad that is a summer favourite in Italy, you can have it any day in Jakarta! Just head down to Jalan Kemang Raya No. 120.
In Jakarta, Sushi Tei is synonymous with the word ‘sushi’ because they have an outlet in any of the large malls here. Each time I go to the outlet at Senayan City, I never leave without enjoying a plate of Cold tofu salad with wafu dressing. Actually, I love all their salads, which include Wakame salad, Sashimi salad, and Dai dai salad.
Also located at Senayan City, Jittlada is the stop for lovers of authentic Thai food. One of the dishes that brings in the crowd is Yam Pla Duk Foo, which is a mango salad with catfish crumbs.
