Review: Transformational Yoga Book

Use yoga to transform your life on the physical health, energetic, and spiritual levels with this book.

We hardly think of yoga as transformational. But do you know that in the The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a prominent compilation of texts about various yoga traditions, regular practice of yoga will eventually bring about various transformations in your life?

Rutgers University Professor of religions of India Edwin Bryant explains that, to Patanjali, “Yoga essentially consists of meditative practices culminating in attaining a state of consciousness free from all modes of active or discursive thought, and of eventually attaining a state where consciousness is unaware of any object external to itself, that is, is only aware of its own nature as consciousness unmixed with any other object.”

In our modern approach to yoga—using it for physical fitness and strength—most of us may not have paid much attention to the spiritual side of the practice. But you would’ve definitely felt the positive emotional effects felt during and after doing yoga—a sense of achievement, joy, and most definitely peace.

It’s these euphoric feelings that draws so many people back to yoga, again and again. But without consistent practice, motivation, and guidance, it is challenging to approach yoga in the way that is documented by Patanjali.

Until now.

Founder of Light Love Laughter Academy and yoga teacher Linda Loo wrote a book titled, ‘Transformational Yoga: The Secret of Health, Vitality & Spiritual Bliss’. This book covers a type of Integral Yoga that was created by Sri Swamiji Vidyananda, based on the work of Sri Aurobindo. The main use of Transformational Yoga is for holistic healing and spiritual progress, promising ‘quick tangible results’ after one single practice. The book thus maps out how anyone can use this form of yoga to transform their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The book is divided into three parts: Yoga and Chakras, The Preparation (Pre-Practice), The Yoga Practice. This introduces the various aspects of Transformational Yoga in a progression, from understanding the energy flow to preparing the physical body for yoga poses, before going into the actual yoga practice.

Guidance and clear instructions and accompanied by photographs that illustrate the points being made. For example, the chakra points that each pose activates is clearly marked, and photographs show each pose should be done. This brings more awareness to the purpose of each pose, both on the physical and spiritual aspects.

While the book is written for practitioners new to Transformational Yoga, it contains information that is useful for all yoga practitioners, seasoned and new. Everything is presented in a progressive order, and explained in a way that is easily understood by any reader.

Take for example this practical reference to explain chakras and the Pranic: “Think of a hydraulic or thermal power station. The pressure of rapidly flowing water or rising steam rotates turbines to generate electricity, at the same time creating a powerful magnetic field. This magnetic energy can then be collected and stored in accumulators, and when required, sent to substations through high-voltage wire cables, and processed through transformers to adjust the voltage in order to be used for specific purposes.”

The final chapter of the book ends with meditation, which is an essential part of yoga stated in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. You would have experienced it in savasana or corpse pose but in Transformational Yoga, meditation is done seated. There are also easy to follow, step by step instructions on how to meditate, and it is as simple as paying attention to your breath. Nothing complicated, and definitely very easy to do.

If you’re looking to use yoga as a transformational tool in your life, the Transformational Yoga book is a good place to begin—it conveniently provides you with reminders on how yoga can literally change your life on the physical, energetic, and spiritual levels, regardless whether you are someone who has never done yoga, or recently started on it, or are a seasoned yoga practitioner or instructor.
